LOOK LAB
I created an app, Look Lab, that enables users to ‘try on’ new items with clothes already in their wardrobe which has the potential to facilitate a positive shopping experience while reducing the environmental impact of fast fashion.

Fast-fashion is the second-biggest consumer of water and is responsible for around 10% of global carbon emissions.
Due to the inexpensive nature of fast fashion, individuals are frequently convinced to purchase new clothes or accessories even though they may never wear these items.
This cycle of making unnecessary purchases can lead to a range of negative emotions known as ‘buyers remorse’.
Hypothesis: An app that enables users to connect with people close by will make exercising more attainable for those with low motivation.

Business Opportunities
This app would be the perfect tool for local thrift stores to display items for sale, and illustrate ways to style them. This app would also enable users to try these items with what is already in their closet.
Attract New Customers
Reduce Returns
Logic
The social media aspect of this app enables users to gain a following which can be utilized to promote new products
By enabling potential customers to try the outfit with items they already own, the rate of returns can be reduced
Convince skeptics that they will wear this item – a positive purchase for reducing waste
Preliminary Research
First, I surveyed 80 individuals who are interested in fashion.

Target Audience:
Women aged 18-35 who frequently purchase new clothing.
Next, I interviewed 6 of these participants, aged 18-29, to develop deeper insights.
I won’t show you their faces, but with permission, I will show you their wardrobes.

I asked questions about:
Their interest in fashion
Their shopping habits
How they organize their wardrobe
Their goals and challenges
Insights

Every interviewee reported that they frequently rewear the same few outfits
Everyone admitted to feelings of guilty for not wearing the clothes they already own
More than half reported that they spend more money when shopping online

5 out of 6 prefer shopping online because it’s easier, quicker, and cheaper
The few who said they are good at organizing their wardrobes (2) rated themselves as more confident

Design Overview
Key Moments
Mindful design empowers users to be the innovators; using the product as a tool to help them achieve their goals.
Below are some of the moments I feel are most important based on my research and knowledge of psychology. Further research and testing would likely reveal more use cases.

AI Recommendations for Daily Inspiration
By using technology to identify different items of clothing by color and pattern, the app is able to provide the user with recommendations according to their style preferences.
This sets Look Lab apart from competitors that merely allow users to create collages of outfits.

Trending Opportunities
The ‘Explore’ page integrates a social element to the app, and to the fashion world itself – allowing users to share their own looks, view whats trending, and see what their friends are wearing.
With opportunities to go viral on the ‘Trending’ tab, users are encouraged to create more looks to promote themselves, their business, or utilzie the tab for paid influencer ads.

Try On Feature
Within the ‘Explore’ tab, users are even able to try on new items of clothing from other individuals with items that the user already owns.
This is particularly important for reducing fast fashion waste because it encourages users to think about whether new purchases can be styled with items they already own, or whether they would require even further purchases.
