SWEATSQUAD
People want to increase their levels of physical activity but do not have the motivation without a workout partner, so often find themselves wasting money on gym memberships that they do not go to. Therefore, I decided to build an app, SweatSquad, to battle these challenges.

Background: With less people exercising since the pandemic, motivation is at an all-time low. Many people have goals to increase their physical activity levels, but have difficulty maintaining a routine.
Research has shown that motivation is a key component for exercise adherence, and that motivation can be increased through the presence of a workout partner.
Hypothesis: An app that enables users to connect with people close by will make exercising more attainable for those with low motivation.

Business Opportunities
This app would be perfect to accompany local gyms to encourage members to find workout buddies, and therefore, keep their gym memberships. It would also be possible to add personal trainers to the app for users to contact.
Retention
Reduce cancellations that occur due to a lack of motivation
Logic
Convince skeptics that they will use their gym membership
Social
Ignite interest in new potential customers
Preliminary Research
I surveyed 36 people (aged 19-35) who are actively trying to exercise more frequently.

67%
Exercise at least twice a week
81%
Prefer to workout with a friend
56%
Have had a personal trainer at some point
Next, I interviewed 8 of these participants to develop deeper insights.
I asked questions about:
1. Their fitness goals and challenges
2. Their exercise routines
3. Their feelings towards an app to facilitate those experiences
Insights

Most individuals said they preferred simple exercises like yoga, running, and walking
People do not like spending over $50 a month to achieve their goals (e.g., personal trainers)
Those who did invest more money into achieving their fitness goals reported to be more successful

About half have a planned workout reigime for the week, the other half wing it
Over half of individuals struggle to stick to their workout routines
“I really need someone to push me to workout so I take accountability.“

Design Overview
Sign Up Flow
To ensure simplicity and a user-friendly experience, I created the sign up flow in a step-by-step design – walking the user through each task.

Key Moments
Mindful design empowers users to be the innovators; using the product as a tool to help them achieve their goals.
Below are some of the moments I feel are most important based on my research and knowledge of psychology. Further research and testing would likely reveal more use cases.

Social Integration
With the community page, users are encouraged to share their recent workouts and achievements with their matches.
This ignites conversation and thus, encourages other users to do the same.

Scheduling
My research revealed that many individuals struggle to exercise because they cannot find the time to workout or go to the gym.
The scheduling tab enables users to clearly see the workouts they have planned, and who they’re with.

Interests
By giving users a wide array of activities to choose from, this app meets the needs of unique users with unique interests.
Moreover, by displaying the interests of potential matches, users are able to make more informed decisions about who they choose to add.

Apple Watch Pairing
With the option to sync with Apple Watch, it is likely that users will feel more inclined to use the app in order to share their achievements with their community.
